This season’s Dhaka Premier League will not only be remembered for the performances of the established stars but also perhaps for the vibrant displays of several
national discarded cricketers.
The country’s solitary limited-overs competition, won for the first time by Gazi Tank Cricketers on Friday, provided the ultimate stage for the cricketers to stake a
strong claim for their places in the national side in the future and some of them grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
Out-of-form opener Imrul Kayes, once the mainstay of the national side, announced his return to contention as the Gazi Tanks batsman accumulated 655 runs to become the
highest scorer among local cricketers.
Gazi Tanks’ middle order batsman Roquibul Hasan was also among the runs as he garnered 551 runs to catapult his name as one of the frontrunners for the national side
in the event of injuries.
Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club’s Junaid Siddiqui, who has two international hundreds to his name, did his chances of coming back to the national set-up no harm at all as
he totalled 499 runs.
With 430 runs, another Sheikh Jamal batsman Jahirul Islam perfectly used the league as a stepping stone for better days ahead while Brothers Union’s Nafees Iqbal, with
the same amount of runs, came roaring back to form.
In the bowling department, the most improved cricketer proved to be seamer Farhad Reza, who with 29 scalps spearheaded Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club’s campaign and by
the end of the league he was the joint-highest wicket taker alongside Gazi Tanks’ left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny.
Prime Bank Cricket Club’s Enamul Haque Jr, one of the most consistent performers of the domestic circuit, gathered 28 wickets while national paceman Rubel Hossain took
25 wickets.
Right-arm pace bowler Al Amin, who earned a national call-up for the very first time in the recently concluded tour by New Zealand, scalped 20 wickets.
