The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed Tuesday said that the time to reach a consensus over the upcoming polls was running short
with every second passing by and the politicians needed to pay urgent attention to the issue. “The people are the supreme authority and change makers … they want peace
and discipline in the society. The politicians should read the pulse of the people, they want to see end to the political impasse,” the CEC told journalists at his
office.
He said that the politicians should come forward to stop all political anarchy in the society in order to fulfil the people’s expectation that a consensus would be
reached over the present political crisis.
Rakibuddin said the Jatiya Party chairman’s plea to his party men was a party matter. He added that there are some rules and the returning offices and candidates
concerned will sort out the matter.
The CEC was not concerned about it, he noted while he was replying to a query regarding Ershad’s appeal to his party men to withdraw candidature from the election
fray.
“We are hopeful that we could see an end to the political impasse and that’s why we are still saying that everything could be changed if the major political parties
announce their participation in election,” the CEC added.
