THE patients who need to undergo operations at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital are suffering much as the authorities postponed surgical operations at the hospital amid a crisis over buying medical and surgical requirements since Friday.
The surgical operations remind stopped as the authorities did not purchase bandage, cotton, ECG paper, X-ray film following a court order.
Sources in the hospital have said the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital is going to give work order for buying medical and surgical requirements to nine firms but a firm named Fahim Medical Hall lodged a case against the authorities bringing allegations of violating the public procurement rules 2008.
Following the case, the court ordered a stay on purchasing MSR till December 14 and issued a show cause letter to the hospital director.
Associate professor of surgical department of RMCH Abu Bakkar Siddique told New Age that they were not able to do surgical operations because of the MSR crisis.
He said they had brought on Wednesday some bandage from gynecology department but it was finished on Thursday.
Abu Bakkar also said the attendants of the patients were buying the surgical requirements from outside, which is risky as they may contain germs.
Meanwhile the asthma and pneumonia patients are also suffering as there is no oxygen at the hospital since Thursday.
The intensive care unit of the hospital also remained shut, with two children already dead at the hospital for lack of oxygen.
The hospital authorities said they were failing to bring oxygen due to the opposition blockade.
The hospital sources said Babu Islam, 3, son of Golam Mostafa, resident at Niamotpur upazila in Naogaon, and Merina Khatun, 2, from Bogra, died at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital Thursday for lack of oxygen.
Many others children suffering from pneumonia are also fighting for live as the authorities failing to ensure supply of oxygen to the hospital.
Shafiuddin Ahmed, father of Faisal who was admitted at ward 27 of RMCH, told New Age that his child’s condition was deteriorating but the authorities did not have supply of oxygen.
He also said that he managed some oxygen from private clinic but the quantity was inadequate against the demand.
The authorities, however, said that they brought 1400 litres of oxygen from Rangpur Medical College Hospital on Thursday but it would be finished on Friday night.
When contacted, Rajshahi Medical College Hospital director Brigadier General Saidur Rahman, admitting to the crisis, told New Age that Fahim Medical Hall had lodged a case with the court and filed a general diary with police ‘just to harass us although we floated the according to the law.’
Meanwhile the Rajshahi city mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul sent a statement to newsmen in this regard. He requested all quarters to resolve stalemate at the hospital.
Rajshahi Rakkha Sangram Parishad general secretary Jamat Khan told New Age that the hospital authority made a syndicate with some MSR suppliers. The authority several times gave work order to these suppliers. He alleged that the hospital authority responsible for this situation.
