Unpreceden-ted security measures have been taken across the country, especially in the capital, ahead of the execution of convicted war criminal Abdul Quader Mollah.
Mollah, an assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, is scheduled to be hanged at one minute past Tuesday midnight, confirmed State Minister for home affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku on Tuesday. Tuku told The Independent that the law enforcers have taken unparalleled security measures across the country since the evening to avoid any untoward incident.
The measures were taken fearing possible attacks of Jamaat, Shibir activists on public properties and sensitive establishments over the execution of Quader Mollah, Tuku said.
“We have also deployed plain-cloth personnel of different intelligence agencies at all important points of Dhaka,” he added.
Meanwhile, Director General of Boarder Guard Bangladesh Major General Aziz Ahmed told this correspondent that they have already deployed platoons of BGB personnel at vulnerable points across the country to ensure law and security ahead of the execution of the court verdict against Jamaat leader Quader Mollah.
“We have reserve force on standby at different places and these personnel will be deployed immediately if necessary,” he said.
The authorities, in an immediate move, deployed the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Dhaka and Chittagong after the decision of Mollah execution was taken.
The security measures were taken following reports by intelligence agencies that the activists of Jamaat and Shibir were planning sabotages across the country ahead of the execution war crimes convict Quader Mollah.
