At least three people received burn injury in a fire in an oil tanker of the state-owned Jamuna Oil Company at Chittagong port Tuesday morning.
The injured — Md Kamal, Azmi and Emon — were on duty in the engine room of the oil tanker, the police said, adding that they were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner
Mostak Ahamed said the fire originated in the engine room of MT King Fisher-1 of Jamuna Oil Company at about
9:00am.
In association with
the members of Bangladesh Navy, the Chittagong Fire Service and Civil
Defense members and the port’s fire fighting
team put out the fire after about one hour’s efforts, he added.
‘Fortunately the five lakh litres of reserved oil in the tanker did not catch fire,’ the ADC said.
The Chittagong fire service deputy assistant director, Jashim Uddin, said a cylinder exploded in the kitchen near the engine room of the tanker that caused the fire and damaged the engine and some nearby cabins.
The fire could cause huge damage had it come in contact with the reserved oil, he added.
