Awami League joint general secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanok yesterday alleged that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was engaged in spreading lies to mislead the people after her blunder for boycotting January 5 parliamentary elections. Addressing a press conference at the party chief Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office, Nanok said Khaleda Zia is now engaged in ‘evil politics after she becomes isolated from the people. “We believe that the people will reject Khaleda’s falsehood as they have done through participating in the January 5 elections,” he said.
The Awami League leader further alleged that Khaleda had hatched a conspiracy to kill people and to destroy communal harmony of the country in the name of foiling January 5 elections.
“We hoped that Khaleda will seek apology to the countrymen for her misdeeds but she engaged in fresh conspiracy to mislead the people,” he said.
About holding dialogue with BNP, the AL leader said Khaleda Zia will have to cut off ties with Jamaat first and to shun the path of violence in a bid to create a congenial atmosphere for holding a dialogue to resolve ongoing political stalemate.
Issuing a note of warning the AL joint general secretary said that if BNP again involves in violent activities in the name of waging political movement, the government would deal them with iron hands.
Meanwhile, in a separate programme in the city, Awami League advisory council member Suranjit Sengupta said that extremism should be curbed first to create an atmosphere of holding a free, fair and acceptable election.
He alleged that Khaleda Zia has stigmatised the country’s democracy by incorporating militancy in it and carrying out attacks on minorities for she should seek apology to the
nation first and then Khaleda should engage in fresh talks with the government.
Referring to hold a fresh general election, the AL leader said that the foreign diplomats were creating pressure on the government to hold a fresh general election by June, 2014 by holding a dialogue with the main opposition BNP. “I want to tell those diplomats, yes another general elections will be held in the country on June but the month may be of 2021,” Suranjit said mocking diplomats.
About dialogue, Suranjit Sengupta, also the former minister said that Khaleda Zia has become too democratic. Now she wants dialogue but earlier she had termed the present government ‘illegal’. If the government is illegal, a dialogue with it would also be illegal, he added.
