Three factories were gutted in a devastating fire at Kashaituli in Bangshal in the capital yesterday.
Nine fire-fighting units, in cooperation with factory workers and local people, brought the fire under control in more than one and a half hours of efforts.
The cause of the fire, extent of damage and casualty could not be known immediately. Talking to The Independent Major Mahbub, Director (Operation) of Fire Service and Civil Defense from the spot said: “The fire was first originated from a tin-shed soap factory at around 6:00PM and then it spread to a nearby plastic hanger factory.”
The residents of the adjacent buildings were evacuated immediately after the fire broke out, he added.
Mahbub could not ascertain the cause of the fire, but he suspected the blaze might have been caused by chemical reaction or electric short circuit.
He said, ‘‘Nine units of the Fire Service and Civil Defense (FSCD) rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control at around 7:45pm.”
The fire fast spread to other factories because of the storage of high inflammable materials like chemicals there, he added.
He said that they would investigate to find out the reasons of the fire incident.
Hundreds of local people, panicked by the fire watched fire fighting engines dousing the blaze.
Md Arzu Miah, a resident of the adjacent building, said the owner of the Western Soap factory, Md Rezwan Ahmed, was in Biswa Ijtema at Tongi.
