Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), angered by injury of a colleague in an accident, brought out procession and blocked the Palashi intersection for around two hours yesterday.
Anika Tasnim, a third year student of the architecture department, was injured when a speeding microbus hit the rickshaw in which she was travelling at around 10:45 am. On hearing the news, the BUET students vandalised the microbus and demonstrated in Palashi intersection.
Later, BUET VC Professor SM Nazrul Islam came to the spot and tried to calm the agitated student and assured them around noon that their demand would be met.
“A temporary roundabout will be constructed here for now,” he said. “A permanent one will be built later.”
He also assured the students of widening streets around the university.
BUET authorities have started constructing a traffic barrier in the intersection as per the demand of the agitating students.
Inspector Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shabagh Police Station, admitted the incident and said Anika, who sustained injuries in her waist, has been admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Agitated students of the premier engineering university took to the street in protest, demanding immediate construction of a roundabout to regulate traffic.
Lalbagh zone’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Abida Sultana said several hundred students had joined the demonstration, causing massive traffic congestion in the area.
Anika has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, she sustained injuries on her waist, the OC said.
