The Bangladesh Cricket Board on Saturday named paceman Mashrafee bin Murtaza as the captain for the two-match Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka.
Mashrafee will lead the side in the absence of regular captain Mushfiqur Rahim, who was ruled out of the series with a finger injury. The decision was surprising given that the Board had earlier nominated Tamim Iqbal as the vice-captain for the series.
Tamim also led the Tigers during the just concluded second Test when Mushfiq was nursing his injury.
However, the BCB was clearly unhappy with his form and his approach, and instead preferred to put a more senior cricketer in charge. Tamim was retained as the vice-captain for the Twenty20 series.
Mashrafee last captained the Tigers in the first one-day international against New Zealand in 2010.
Mushfiq is expected to join the squad before the one-day series, which will start on February 17. The two Twenty20 matches will be held in Chittagong on February 12 and 14.
