Workers need to pay Tk 5,000 more for airline change
The migration cost of a Malaysia bound worker will increase by Tk 5000 due to change of airliners in February, according to Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training.
The BMET has recently taken a decision in principle that Bangladeshi workers would be sent to Kuala Lumpur by Malaysian Airlines, instead of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, despite the increased airfare, the officials said.
The decision came as the Bangladesh’s national flag carrier frequently changed its schedule flights during January.
The disruption in Biman’s flight schedule has annoyed Malaysian employers and Malaysian government officials who came to KL airport to receive Bangladeshi workers, they said.
Besides, the BMET officials said Bangladeshi workers bound for Malaysia were facing various problems at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport due to disruption in Biman flights.
The one-way airfare was fixed at Tk 18,000 for Biman Bangladesh Airlines while Tk 23,000 estimated for Malaysian Airlines, a concerned BMET official told New Age.
The migration cost for a Malaysia bound worker will now stand at Tk 33,500 instead of Tk 28,500 due to changing the airlines, he said.
The selected workers feel comfortable to fly by Malaysian Airlines despite its high fare, he added.
As visas arrived, at least 700 Bangladeshi workers would be going to Malaysia in February by Malaysian Airline.
According to BMET data, Malaysia has been recruiting workers from Bangladesh through the government to government channel since April-May of last year.
At least 2,308 Bangladeshi workers have gone to Malaysia with jobs in the plantation sector so far up to December 31.
Bangladesh and Malaysia signed a memorandum of understanding in November 2012 to introduce G2G mechanism, keeping the private recruiting agents out of the migration process.
About 14.5 lakh Bangladeshi workers aspiring for jobs in Malaysia registered their names with the government database.
