Netherlands skipper Peter Borren said on Monday that he put this win ahead of his side’s first win against England back in 2009, when the minnows shocked the world by defeating England by four wickets in the opening game of the ICC World Twenty20 at Lord’s.
The Netherlands inflicted another embarrassment upon the 2010 champions on Monday in Chittagong when they beat England by 45 runs to end their ICC World Twenty20 2014 campaign.
‘It’s completely different, although this one in a way is more satisfying because there’s a lot more build up and a lot more work. Back in 2009 they didn’t know what to expect; we just sort of came into the radar,’ said Borren.
‘We just ambushed them in 2009; today we won by 45 runs or something. It’s not the same jubilation. It’s Chittagong, not Lord’s,’ said Borren.
‘This one’s more satisfying, that was one more excitement,’ he added.
Borren added that he made fond memories in this tournament, which he believes will certainly help them in the future.
‘Most of the guys, I’d say probably no one else has got another job. We have had a hectic schedule last three years. It’s not quite full time remuneration, but Associate cricket has been playing a lot of cricket, whereas in 2009 a few other guys were working,’ said Borren.
‘Now it’s pretty tough to sort of combine work and cricket. Although it might change now, we might not have much cricket in the near future,’ added Borren.
‘First of all, we do recognise the fact that we were representing Associates here. We had to work bloody hard to come here. We take it very seriously. The future of Associates; well all the countries are different.’
‘If you look at all our games here, I don’t think tonight is lucky. If you watched all of our cricket, it’s sort of not a big surprise and we have improved a lot in the couple of years, thanks to our sponsor and the ICC. At the moment we don’t know when our next match is.’
‘We have nothing this summer, not one fixture. This will be a nice time to finish I suppose, but hopefully something will get sorted out. We are very proud of our effort here.’
