The Australian women’s cricket team are on cloud nine after clinching their third straight title in the ICC World Twenty20 against England on Sunday as it helped them to erase some of their pains in the recent Ashes loss. In a repeat of the 2012 World T20 final, Australia dominated in all the three departments to outclass England by six wickets as they reached 106-4 in 15.1 overs after restricting the opposition to 105-8.
It also helped them to move further ahead of their nearest rivals in this format as England failed to capitalise the big occasion preventing them from equaling Australia’s title-count having claimed the inaugural World T20 crown.
The possibility of an English victory was very much there as they defeated the Australians in the recent Ashes by 2-1 margin.
‘We are disappointed with the Ashes loss, but winning three Twenty20 World Cups is pretty special,’ victorious Australian skipper Meg Lanning told reporters at the post-match conference at Mirpur on Sunday.
‘It was great to come out here and play a pretty perfect game. We built around the tournament pretty well (since the opening game defeat against New Zealand),’ said Lanning.
‘We gained momentum, we gained confidence. When we came into the final, we had a lot of players in good form,’ said Lanning.
On the other hand, disappointed English captain Charlotte Edwards admitted that they were beaten full and square by the Australians as they hardly put up a fight.
‘Really disappointing performance but I think credit has to go to Australia. I think they bowled exceptionally well. We didn’t really have any answers with bat or ball and they’re deserved champions,’ said Edwards.
‘We know they’ve got a real threat with the bat, I thought Meg played exceptionally well but when you’re chasing 105 you can come out and play like that. 105 is never going to win you a World Cup final,’ said Edwards.
‘I think they bowled well upfront, we didn’t get as many in the Powerplays as we’d have liked and then we got going again, then lost three quick
wickets. Sarah’s [Taylor] dismissal was quite crucial, then Heather [Knight] and Lydia [Greenway] followed. They are three backbones of our middle order,’ said Edwards.
Player-of-the-match Sarah Coyte explained the reason behind her success to the media when a journalist asked her what was written in the tattoo on her left-arm.
‘God gives the greatest battles to the strongest warriors,’ said Coyte.
‘This is nice to be able to execute today and I’ve always bowled at the death and it’s something I’m really proud of,’ added Coyte, who picked up 3-16.
