Soothing, comforting and enthralling was Friday evening for a packed audience at Music and Dance Centre of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy; as noted local and Indian maestros of classical music created an ambiance of jubilation with their musical brilliance.
Music Alliance World Wide, in association with BSA, arranged the programme titled ‘Notes and Tunes in Baishakh’ to primarily showcase the local talented classical exponents to a wider audience.
A number of classical exponents from across the country played different instruments in the opening half of the programme. Preceded by a short introduction by Mehjabeen Rahman, president and founder of MAWW, Jamalpur-based artiste Kabir Ali took the stage, and with a master’s ease created a befitting ambience with his presentation of a bhatiali tune on his 200 year old shanai.
Bhatiali on shanai was a new experience for most of the urban audience. The easy and prolonged tune of bhatiali, a folk genre of music which is originally sung by boatmen while going downstream, on shanai was a piece to rejoice.
Following him, Shantanu performed a raga on harmonium accompanied by Pintu Sen Das on tabla and Satyajit Chakrabarty presented a captivating recital on sitar, accompanied by Sabuj Ahmed on tabla.
While all these performances could keep the audience riveted, flautist Murtaja Kabir Murad led the audience to a trance.
The only vocal performance at the show was by Chittagong-based artiste Swarnamay Chakrabarty, and the featured artiste was Kolkata-based renowned sarod player Abhisek Lahiri.
Lahiri, in the concluding part, enticed the audience with pleasing presentation of raga jog, a late evening raga of the khamaj thaat. The artiste ended his presentation with a short recital with another late evening raga tilak kamod.
Liaquat Ali Lucky, director general of BSA, and Olivier Litvine, director of Alliance Francaise de Dhaka, were present at the show respectively as chief and special guests.
