Late noted film activist Badal Rahman was remembered through a commemorative speech programme on his 4th death anniversary on Wednesday at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital. BSA and Movieyana Film Society jointly organised a programme titled Bangladesh-er Pramanno Chitra: Sangskritir Smrity Ebong Itihaser Binirman to mark the occasion. The keynote speech was delivered by filmmaker Rajibul Hossain who analysed Badal Rahman’s contributions to the documentary filmmaking arena of the country.
Rajibul Hossain emphasised that Badal Rahman was an all-out person for the cause of film and that he was not only a filmmaker of repute, but an active organiser and one of the pioneers of film society movement in the country.
A socially and politically vigilant Badal Rahman thought that film can contribute a lot to shape and showcase the people’s psyche, said Hossain.
Lailun Nahar Shemmy, president of the Federation of Film Societies of Bangladesh; Nasiruddin Yousuff, noted filmmaker and president of Sammilio Sangskritik Jote; cultural personality Rizvi Hayat; film critique Fahmidul Haque and media researcher Sajedul Rahman Firoze also spoke on the occasion.
The programme also featured screening of documentary film Pothikrit following the discussion session. Directed jointly by Belayet Hossain Mamun and Saiful Islam Jarnal, the film depicts the life and achievements of Badal Rahman.
Born on June 4, 1949, Rahman completed his diploma in Film Editing from National Film and Television Institute of India. He was amongst the first Bangladeshis to earn a film-related degree. After returning to Bangladesh, he, along with Syed Salahuddin Zaki, made his first film Prottashar Shurjo in 1974. Rahman was the director of the first full-length feature film for children in Bangladesh, Emil-er Goenda Bahini (1980). Till his demise, he was the president of the Federation of Film Societies of Bangladesh. Badal Rahman died on June 11, 2010 due to cardiac arrest.
