Iconic figure of feminism and nationalist movements in Bangladesh, late noted poet Sufia Kamal was remembered on her 103rd birth anniversary at a cultural programme at the auditorium of Chhayanaut on Friday. The event featured presentation of songs and dance that resonated with the theme of monsoon.
The programme began with vocal presentation of raga kedar mallar by Rezwan Ali. It was the segment that featured group dance and music renditions that entertained the audience the most. Chhayanaut singers rendered Dharonir Gaganey Miloner Chhondey, while dancers presented a chorus rendition to the song. While it was drizzling outside, the dancers and singers brought in refreshing appeal of monsoon shower into the auditorium through their recitals.
The chorus also presented Prabol Ghono Megh Aji depicting the dense, dark clouds of Ashar through the beautiful lyrics and charming melody of the song. Another presentation by the chorus Dewai Dhorilo Shaon also revealed the beauties of monsoon to the audience.
In solo renditions, noted singer Iffat Ara Dewan’s presentation of Aji Tomay Abar received audience acclamation. Mohit Khan, Afroza Khan Mita, Shuma Roy and Ashim Dutta also entertained the audience with their presentation of Parodeshi Megh Jaore Phirey, Gogoney Saghana Chomikechhe Damini, Badhu Emon Badal Diney and Kothai Alo Kothai Ore Alo respectively.
The programme also featured Krishty Hefaz and Liaquat Khan’s recitation of poems by different poets featuring monsoon.
Earlier, cultural personality Mafidul Haque delivered a speech on life and contributions of Sufia Kamal.
A revolutionary in movement for women emancipation, Sufia Kamal was born on June 20 in 1911 in Shayestabad Nawab family in Barisal. She spent her life for the welfare of the people. Her major works include Mrttikar Ghran, Ekattarer Diary, Benibinyas Samay To Ar Nei, Ekale Amader Kal. She received numerous awards including Bangla Academy Award, Lenin Centenary Jubilee Medal from the Soviet Union, Ekushey Padak, and many more.
