The government is likely to set the export earnings target at $33.20 billion for the current financial year 2014-2015 with a year-on-year growth of 8.85 per cent. The commerce ministry will hold a meeting today with stakeholders to finalise the target at the Export Promotion Bureau in the city.Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed will chair the meeting which will be attended by leaders of FBCCI, BGMEA, BKMEA and jute sector businessmen, among others.
The country’s export earnings grew by11.65 per cent to $30.17 billion year-on-year in the just concluded financial year 2013-2014.
The FY14 earnings missed the target of $30.5 billion.
Commerce ministry officials said that the export earnings target would be set at a single digit of only 8.85 considering the recent slowdown in export growth of garment products, the main export item of the country, and declining trend in jute export.
Bangladesh exported $24.5 billion of garment products in FY2013-14, according to the data. The garment sector accounts for about 80 per cent of the country’s exports.
