In the course of mankind, some rare individuals reach such heights that it is difficult to put befitting adjectives before their names. Rabindranath Tagore is such a name. Even after 73 years since his death, the maestro remains as bright as the North Star in all forms of artwork that he has touched during his lifetime. Tagore stands prominent in all most all sections of performing arts and literature including music, poetry, novels, short stories, theatre, dance and so on.
Today is Shrabon 22, the 73rd death anniversary of the great Nobel laureate poet. Different local socio-cultural organisations and television channels have chalked out special programmes to mark the day.
Bangla Academy has organised a discussion session at its Kobi Shamsur Rahman seminar hall at 4:00pm today. Shamsuzzaman Khan, director general of the academy, will deliver a welcome speech at the programme which will also feature a speech to be delivered by Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam, who is the secretary of the Planning Department of the government. Shafiqul Islam, in his speech, will focus on the life and contributions of Tagore and also the relevance of the poet’s works in contemporary world. Professor emeritus Anisuzzaman will also be present at the discussion and will deliver a speech on Tagore.
Renowned cultural organisation Chhayanut will organise a cultural show on Friday evening at 7:00pm at its main auditorium. The programme will feature group and solo dance presentations on Tagore songs which will be performed by noted and upcoming dancers of the country. Besides, the programme will also feature group and solo rendition of timeless songs of Tagore.
Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Shilpy Sangstha will hold a two-day Tagore music festival at the Shawkat Osman Auditorium of Central Public Library on August 8 and 9. About 100 artistes of the organisation will present Tagore songs at the programme.
Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy will organise a cultural programme at the academy’s national Theatre Hall on August 12. The show will include music and dance to be presented by different cultural organisations of the country.
Different television channels have also arranged special shows in marking the day.
ATN Bangla will air special teleplay Apod at 8:00pm. Adapted and directed by Ferdous Hasan, the play casts Dilara Zaman, Abdullah Rana and Banna Mirza. RTV will air teleplay Mallodan, which is an adaptation of Tagore’s short story with the same title, at 8:20pm today.
Adapted and directed by Sumon Anowar, the play stars Tisha, Arman Parvez Murad, Sabbir Ahmed and others.
Channel i will telecast a cultural show titled Rabindranath K Smaran e Baran e Amra Ekdin Chirokal will be aired at 7:30pm. The programme will feature Tagore songs and dance, recitation of Tagore poems, and a discussion session on the poet by noted singers, dancers, recitation artistes and Tagore exponents of the country.
Banglavision will air a special episode of phono live studio concert titled Music Club. Eminent Tagore singer Rezwana Chowdhury Banya will sing at the programme and will also receive song requests from her fans over phone. Produced by Nahid Ahmed Biplob, the programe will be aired at 11:25pm.
Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941) reshaped Bengali literature and music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Author of Gitanjali and its profoundly sensitive and beautiful verse, he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. He was highly influential in introducing the best of Indian culture to the West and vice versa, and he is generally regarded as the outstanding creative artist of the modern Indian subcontinent. Tagore wrote an astounding total of 2,230 songs, eight novels, 84 short stories and numerous poems in his phenomenal career.
