Accused bank official found dead in prison cell
Former manager of Sonali Bank’s Ruposhi Bangla Hotel Branch, AKM Azizur Rahman, was found dead at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital’s prison cell Sunday night. Dhaka Central Jail senior Superintendent Forman Ali told New Age that Azizur was undergoing treatment there for over a month. Azizur was suffering from diabetes and heart problems, said the jail official.
Shahbagh police officer-in-charge Shirajul Islam said the body would be taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Azizur, former deputy general manager of Sonali Bank, was arrested by RAB mid-October, 2012, over the loan scam involving Hallmark
Group.
He was one of the accused in the charge-sheet filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission on the Hallmark money embezzlement
cases.
The commission on October 7, 2013, submitted charge sheets in 11 cases against 25 people including Azizur, on the Hallmark-Sonali Bank scam, to a magistrate’s court in
Dhaka.
ACC said that the then branch manager Azizur issued Tk 450.34 crore worth IBP to the Hallmark Group, violating rules.
