The Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday dropped charges against 11 government officials, including three secretaries, who had been investigated in three graft cases involving embezzlement of around Tk 395 crore. The officials include energy and mineral resources secretary Abu Bakar Siddique, also former Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation chairman, Anwarul Karim, the additional secretary (OSD) and also BPC former secretary, AKM Zafrullah, retired secretary and also former BPC chairman, Major (retd) Muktadir Ali, former BPC chairman and Mohammad Abdul Awal, BPC former deputy managing director and also Chittagong WASA member.
The officials came under the ACC scanner after cases were filed against them on September 16, 2013. The cases also accused six other officials of the BPC, ACC commissioner M Shahabuddin told reporters at his office.
They are BPC deputy general managers Monilal Das and Jahangir Hossain, senior official Nurul Islam, general manager Gias Uddin Ansari, deputy general manager Kazi Sahidur Rahman and deputy manager Jakir Hossain.
The commission filed the cases with Chittagong port police, based on its primary finding that the six BPC officials had misappropriated around Tk 395 crore by submitting false bills during the years 2009-12.
Shahabuddin said that the commission through investigation had found that the alleged embezzlement had not taken place.
‘We’ve taken statements from all the officials and the commission is satisfied,’ he said.
