The local cricket fans of Rupganj had an exceptional experience on Tuesday when legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar made his brief presence at a local school.
A festive mood prevailed in the area on the outskirts of Dhaka as thousands of local fans rushed to Noapara Government Primary School premises to catch a glimpse of Sachin, one of the greatest cricketers ever to grace the game.
Sachin, who retired from international cricket in 2013 after an illustrious career spanning more than two decades, was taken to the school by Dhaka Premier League club, Legends of Rupganj.
People from all walks of life started gathering in Rupganj from the early hours and their enthusiasm only translated into love when the cricket legend set his feet in the school premises.
Sachin arrived in a private jet in the morning and was flown into Rupganj straight from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport through a helicopter.
People started chanting slogans with his name once they saw his helicopter hovering over, though they were frustrated initially as the first helicopter that landed carried only security personnel.
People erupted in joy once Sachin got down from the second helicopter along with Legends of Rupganj owner Lutfar Rahman, whose ancestral home is in the tiny Narayanganj upazilla.
Sachin was received by Rupganj mayor who guided him to Noapara Government School to spend some time with the school children.
Sachin, who is also a goodwill ambassador of UNICEF, gave a brief speech at the school and put emphasis on hand washing, sanitation as he showed the school children how to wash their hands in the correct manner.
Hasibul Islam Omi of class four and Mario Islam Tisha of class five will cherish the memory rest of their life as Sachin called them into the podium to show how to wash their hand in a proper manner.
‘Most of the diseases come because of improper hand wash,’ Sachin told the school children. ‘So it is very important that we wash our hands in the right way,’ he suggested.
The school boys could not believe their ears once they were called to receive some autographs from him.
He also donated Tk five lakh for the development of the school.
