The International Cricket Council and the Bangladesh Cricket Board lodged an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland against the reduced ban of former national captain Mohammad Ashraful, said an official. BCB’s disciplinary panel chairman Md Abdur Rashid reduced Ashraful’s eight-year ban to five-year, including a two-year suspended ban, on September 29, opening up the door for the batsman to return to cricket from August 2016.
The BCB and the ICC had 21 days to appeal against the judgment to CAS. The deadline for appeal expired on Monday.
‘We have been informed by our lawyers that an appeal against the judgment was lodged,’ said BCB’s chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury. ‘The lawyers had been given the authority to make a decision on this issue and they acted accordingly.’
Chowdhury also confirmed that an appeal was also lodged against the acquittal of six other individuals.
Ashraful was handed the punishment for his part in the match-fixing scandal of Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 tournament.
The saga unfolded in May this year when one-time prodigy Ashraful tearfully admitted having helped fix matches in the tournament.
