Monjur Rashid’s Solo
Artistic search begins
That the first solo exhibition is something very special and emotion-laden for an artist, was quite evident in Monjur Rashid’s voice, who has showcased 35 paintings under the title of Searching Myself as his first solo at La Galerie at Alliance Française de Dhaka in Dhanmondi in the capital. A graduate of painting department of University of Development Alternatives, Monjur looks determined to find his way into the fine arts scenario. It also sounds good, thematically, that the artist has begun his journey with a quest, that is, searching the self.
‘In our hectic lives, we often lose ourselves amid global, social and personal complexities. I have tried to find myself in relation to my surroundings in these paintings’, shared the artist.
The exhibition, however, is not only a search of the artist’s self; it also seeks to locate others’ selves. With considerable skills, Monjur has worked with watercolour, acrylic and mixed media.
Though figures dominate the canvasses, there is a noticeable tendency on the artist’s part towards making them expressionist.
Most of the faces, including the artist’s, are blurred and hued, but in such a way that they defy to be jacketed into being an expression of any singular emotion. It seems intentional as, the artist says, that it is a search, not a finding. Finding the self, after all, is not an easy thing to achieve.
Art lovers can pay a visit to the exhibition which will be open from 3pm to 9pm till November 3. The exhibition was inaugurated by cultural personality Nasiruddin Yousuff on October 21.
