The price of local red lentil increased in the city’s retail markets over the week ending Friday due to a supply shortage. The prices of other daily essential commodities including rice remained high over the week while the prices of some vegetables and broiler chicken decreased a bit.
The price of local red lentil increased by Tk 5 a kg and the item was retailing at Tk 115-Tk 120 a kg on the day.
Traders said that the prices of local red lentil increased in the market due to off seasonal shortage.
However, the price of red lentil imported from Turkey and Canada was Tk 85-Tk 90 a kg on Friday.
The fine variety of imported red lentil namely Kangaroo was being sold at Tk 115 a kg on the day.
Mizanur Rahman, a retailer at Karwan Bazar, told New Age that most of the demand of red lentil is met through import as local production of the item is not adequate.
An off seasonal shortage of the item took place in the market as nine months have passed since the harvesting of red lentil, he said.
The prices of rice remained high over the week.
Coarse varieties of rice were retailing at Tk 35-Tk 37 a kg on Friday.
The fine variety of miniket rice was selling at Tk 48-Tk 50 a kg while the coarse varieties were retailing at Tk 44-Tk 46 a kg.
The fine varieties of BR-28 rice were selling at Tk 42-Tk 46 a kg and the coarse variety of Parija was selling at Tk 38-Tk 41 a kg.
The fine variety of Najirshail was selling at Tk 55-Tk 57 a kg and the coarse varieties were retailing at Tk 44-Tk 48 a kg.
The prices of vegetables remained stable over the week.
Aubergine was selling at Tk 50 a kg, tomato at Tk 120 a kg, cucumber at Tk 40 a kg, papaya at Tk 20 a kg, okra at Tk 50 a kg and bitter gourd at Tk 50 a kg in the city’s kitchen markets on Friday.
The price of green chili remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 80-Tk 100 a kg on Friday.
The price of onion remained unchanged over the week.
The local variety of onion was selling at Tk 40-Tk 45 a kg while the imported one was selling at Tk 38-Tk 40 a kg on the day.
The prices of local and imported garlic decreased by Tk 10 a kg and the items were selling at Tk 80 a kg and Tk 70 a kg respectively.
The prices of fish remained high.
Rohita was selling at Tk 300-Tk 360 a kg, Katla at Tk 280-Tk 350 a kg, Pangas at Tk 150-Tk 200 a kg and Tilapia at Tk 150-Tk 180 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
The prices of unpacked soya bean and super palm oil remained stable and the items were retailing at Tk 110 a kg and Tk 80 a kg respectively.
The price of bottled soya bean oil (five litres) remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 540 to Tk 560 in the city’s kitchen markets.
Ginger price remained unchanged and the commodity was retailing at Tk 160-Tk 280 a kg.
The price of egg remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 30 a hali (four pieces) in the city on Friday.
Potato price remained stable and the item was selling at Tk 22-Tk 25 a kg over the week.
Sugar price remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 45-Tk 47 a kg on Friday.
The price of beef remained high and the item was selling at Tk 300-Tk 320 a kg on Friday.
Broiler price decreased by Tk 10 a kg and the item was selling at Tk 110-Tk 120 a kg while mutton was selling at Tk 460-Tk 480 a kg over the week.
