For Abul Kalam, an under privileged boy living at a dormitory run by non government Aparajeyo Bangladesh for the last five years, it was not a routine day.
Kalam was in a state of euphoria after being able to execute the guideline provided by his senior partner Sakib al Hasan, whom he had only watched playing on television screen.
Sakib partnered with Kalam during an exhibition match, organised by the UNICEF to mark the 25th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child at the National Academy Ground on Tuesday.
Kalam, a class five student of Rahmatganj Government School, shared 104-run partnership with Sakib during the 10-over-a-side match featuring between a group of adult and adolescent cricketers.
Kalam contributed just three runs in their stand yet it became a life time achievement for him.
‘I am yet to get over what had happened few minutes back,’ Kalam told New Age
‘The feeling of batting with Sakib bhai cannot be explained. He just told me to accompany him and said he is confident that I will be able to do that.’
Sakib blazed away with a 24-ball 101 and in company of Kalam (14) defeated the adult cricket team comprised with politicians, journalists and former national cricket players.
In a nail biting finish, Sakib hit a four off the last ball to lead his adolescent team reaching 142-7 after his three wickets helped the side restrict Adults to 138-3.
When Sakib arrived to the crease his side required exactly 100 runs from 5.5 overs and he started blazing from all corners to seal the fate of the match with his match winning knock.
Former national captain Naimur Rahman led the defeated Adults.
