Mahmud named Tigers’ manager for World Cup
Former national captain Khaled Mahmud on Thursday was appointed as the manager of the Bangladesh cricket team for the upcoming World Cup in Australia-New Zealand.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has finalised the much-anticipated appointment during the 10th meeting of Board of Directors at Hotel Radisson Water Garden in the afternoon.
The BCB also brought wholesale changes in the standing committees replacing former national captain Akram Khan with Naimur Rahman as the chairman of crucial cricket operations committee.
Akram was given the charge of tournament committee.
Gazi Golam Dastagir replaced vice-president AZM Nasir as the chairman of Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis.
BCB also formed a working committee after long time by naming veteran Enayet Hossain as its chairman.
Hanif Bhuyan took over the charge of grounds committee from Lokman Hossain Bhiyan, who will now work as the chairman of facilities management committee.
Hanif earlier headed the medical committee, which was now given to Shafiul Islam Nadel.
Tanjil Chowdhury was removed from the facilities committee to be given the charge of age-group committee.
The meeting had as many as 19 agendas for discussions with the appointment of World Cup team manager and changes in the standing committees topping the list.
Mahmud and Akram were the two main contenders for the coveted manger post after Naimur, also a member of parliament, ruling himself out.
Mahmud finally edged Akram, who was present in the meeting.
BCB president Nazmul had earlier made it clear that he was not happy with the performance of Akram as the chief of cricket operations, a committee that usually looks after the national team related matters.
Akram, currently in Malaysia on a personal visit, sensed his change, though never made any comment publicly over the move.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, new cricket operations chief Naimur promised to work to the best of his ability.
In the meeting, the BCB also approved the names of 14 players for the new contract as recommended by the cricket operations committee.
One-day captain Mashrafee bin Murtaza, Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim, all-rounder Sakib al Hasan and batsman Tamim Iqbal were put in the A+ category while batsman Mahmudullah was put in the A category.
Rubel Hossain, Nasir Hossain and Imrul Kayes are in the B category while Anamul Haque , Mominul Haque, and Shafiul Islam were named in C category.
Taijul Islam, Al-Amin Hossain and Arafat Sunny were named in the D category.
Left arm spinner Abdur Razzak, pacer Robiul Islam and off-spinner Sohag Gazi have been dropped from the contract while Imrul and Shafiul were included newly. Al-Amin, Taijul and Sunny got the contract for the first time.
In the meeting BCB also approved the four-year long operational plan submitted by Australian Ross Turner.
BCB president Nazmul said at a press briefing after the meeting that six former cricketers—Jahangir Shah Badshah, ASM Faruque, Shafiqul Haque Heera, Mainul Haque, Ishtiaq Ahmed and Athar Ali Khan – will be included in a technical committee provided they agree.
