Bangladesh Cricket Board’s new director of coaching Paul Terry said that he will conduct his programmes with understanding and believes that will bring good result for the Bangladesh cricket. The German-born 55-year old former English Test cricketer Terry, who coached Hampshire county team for six years before taking up the BCB role, thinks he can do the things according to the reality and requirement.
‘It will be stupid of me to say we will do it the England or Australian way. My role is to build good relationships with the coaches and also the players,’ Terry said.
‘I will be obviously blending in and know them very well. Hopefully the combination of different thoughts will improve Bangladesh cricket’, he said, referring to coaching set up of national cricket team that has a Sri Lankan head coach, a Zimbabwean bowler and English fielding coach and a few other Bangladeshi support staff.
One of the key responsibilities of Terry is to reorganise the High Performance Unit, which the BCB is planning to revive in order to keep the supply chain in the national team intact.
The HPU, a brainchild of Australian coach Richard McCinnes, once provided the budding talents a platform to improve their skill and subsequently find a place in the national team.
Terry is convinced that he can continue the legacy with the young talents of the country.
‘They will be probably the next group underneath the Test and ODI team. It is a great opportunity for them,’ he said.
‘They will be expected to come in here and obviously work very hard in their skills and all the attributes to become a really good cricketer,’ he said.
‘Ideally we are looking to try and develop cricketers who can go to the next level’
‘We want to make sure that the pool of cricketers who are playing for Bangladesh in one-day and Test is a large pool, so that there is a lot of competition’, he explained about his goals.
Terry also expressed about his focal point of work ‘My role is more into working with the coaches and setting up the programmes. My role will be to work with them and helping them as much as I can’.
He said that BCB is going to recruit a head coach for the unit soon and they can put together plans for the development of future cricketers.
‘I don’t think it will be too long before we have that announcement [for head coach].’
‘It is a great opportunity for the young guys who get selected for the Academy. Their aim has to be to play for Bangladesh in the not too distant future hopefully’, he said.
However, he also suggested that he will take any mean that is needed to get the success.
‘If I can help any way with that, I would like get my hands dirty. Don’t expect me to sit behind the desk all the time. I am looking forward to that as well,’ he said.
‘The setup here is as good as you would find anywhere. The nets, gym are top drawer,’ he said, praising the HPU infrastructure. ‘People who come in here have no excuses. It is a very good setup.’
He believes the programme will last long, ‘We are hoping that this is going to be a sustainable programme. It is here to stay,’ the Englishman said.
