Hosts Bangladesh received a scare ahead of their ICC Under-19 World Cup campaign as left-arm spinner Shawon Gazi was admitted to hospital after sustaining a blow on his head on Tuesday.
The incident left a shiver in the dressing room of the Junior Tigers as they are preparing with high ambitions for the forthcoming gala event, scheduled to start on January 27.The incident occurred when Shawon failed to hold on to a catch of his own bowling and the ball skid through his palm and bruised his forehead.
Though it did not have any severe effect, it was enough to scare the young bowler as he looked traumatised, said sources close to the team.
Team operation manager Sazzad Ahmed said that he is alright and there is nothing to worry about regarding him.
‘We have the MRI report and there was nothing in it,’ Sazzad told New Age on Tuesday.
‘We are keeping him in the hospital just to provide him with some extra care though we are not sure whether we will continue with it.
‘He is expected to return to the team hotel at best by tomorrow [Wednesday] morning,’ he said.
Coach Mizanur Rahman heaved a sigh of relief as the incident did not cost him with one of his major bowlers.
‘Naturally it came as a shock,’ said Mizanur.
‘But he is recovering fast and it puts us in a comfortable position as he is one of our major bowlers in the tournament,’ he said.
Shawon, the left arm spinner is considered to be an integral part of hosts’ line-up and he proved his worth in the just concluded series against West Indies by picking seven wickets in the opening two games before being rested.
