In another match at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Kamrul Islam Rabbi’s four-for helped Victoria Sporting Club defeat Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club by 28 runs.Defending a paltry score of 167, Mahedi broke the backbone of Brothers’ middle-order as he got rid of Zakir Hossain (19), Milind Kumar (duck) and Iftekhar Sajjad in three between over number 16 to 22 to leave Brothers on 67-5.
Alok Kapali, Gurkeerat Singh and Salehin Shad also joined the demolition act picking up two wickets each to dismiss the side for 124 runs for an emphatic Gazi win.
Earlier in the day the it could not be envisaged that the game could become a low scoring one as Gazi openers Anamul Haque (46) and Shamsur (28) got off to a solid start with a 70-run stand.
But the two right-arm off-break bowlers Tushar Imran (4-27) and Iftekhar Sajjad (3-33) made a landslide in Gazi’s batting order as they lost eight wickets for just 32 runs to be reeled on 102-8.
Faruque Hossain (29 not out) and number eleven Mohammad Sharif (26) however took the score past 150.
At Mirpur, Kamrul got 4-38 and got good support from Chaturanga de Silva and Sohrawardi Shuvo, who got 2-42 and 2-32 respectively to bundle out Jamal for 219 in 48.3 overs after their batsmen made 247 in 49.3 overs.
Sohag Gazi, who came to bat at number six, made a half century as he put 59 off 64 but that was not good enough save the side from their fourth loss in nine matches as none of the top four could make a big score despite each scoring over 25.
In Victoria’s innings six batsmen got over 20 but only Mominul Hoque turned it into a half century as he scored 50 off 51 balls.
Mahmudullah got three wickets while Mukhtar Ali and Abdur Rahman grabbed two wickets apiece for Jamal.
