Bangladesh’s young chess prodigy Fahad Rahman became unbeaten champion in the 14th Dubai Juniors Chess Tournament at the Dubai Chess and Culture Club on Tuesday.
The 12-year old Fide Master earned eight points from nine matches to clinch the Sheikh Mahtoum Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum Cup. Rahul Srivatshav of India became runner-up while FM Matviisshen Victor of Ukraine finished third.
In the last round on Tuesday, Fahad beat CM Al Hosani Omran of United Arab Emirates.
Earlier in the eighth round match on Monday, Fahad (Rating-2157) drew with the top-seeded player in the tournament FM Matviisshen Victor (Rating-2390) of Ukraine.
Fahad, who also beat Indian Rahul Srivatshav (Rated-2273), the second seed of the competition, in the seventh round, won a total of seven games and drew two games.
Fahad received a cash prize of US$2,000, the Sheikh Mahtoum Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum Cup and a gold medal for becoming the champion.
A total of 110 players from 12 countries took part in the nine-round Swiss system tournament.
