Former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis on Tuesday backed Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman to come good again overcoming his recent poor form.
‘Cricketers nowadays are very smart, if you don’t keep improving and don’t work really hard on it – you will tend to struggle, which we are seeing all around the world,’ Waqar told reporters in Dhaka.
‘Mustafiz is a talent without a doubt, he has proved it in IPL [Indian Premier League] and at international level and I’m sure once he gets back [into rhythm] he is going to be the same old Mustafiz. ’ he added.
Waqar came to Bangladesh on a short visit at the invitation of Bangladesh Premier League debutants Sylhet Sixers, who were holding a bowler hunt programme in their home side from October 20 to 25.
Mustafiz made his international debut against Waqar’s Pakistan in 2015 in a Twenty20 game before a meteoric rise saw him winning International Cricket Council’s emerging player of the year award next year.
Bangladesh won their all limited-over matches against Pakistan in that series, making it one of the most memorable series for them.
Waqar, who coached Pakistan in that eventful series, said he wanted to forget that memory.
‘It’s great to be back in Bangladesh though my previous tour wasn’t very pleasant,’ he said.
Waqar also praised Sylhet Sixers for their initiative in the debut season.
‘They are working really hard and they are investing lots of their energy, so I’m sure that they will do really well this year,’ he said.
Sylhet Sixers organised the local Pacer Hunt Programme across four districts in Sylhet division on October 20.
Selection camps were held across Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj, and Habiganj before the programme came to its final stage.
The programme titled Future Sixers will end today.
