A ridesharing motorcyclist was stabbed to death by his passenger in the capital’s Mirpur area early Wednesday.
Police arrested the accused at a checkpoint in Birulia of Savar after noticing the blood stained motorbike he was riding.
The body of Mohammad Raja, 34, a resident of Arambagh in Rupnagar area, was recovered from Mirpur-12, said Pallabi police inspector (operations) Uday Kumar Mandal.
Police said that Raja was registered with Pathao ridesharing service. Kawsar hired him from Mirpur’s Kalshi area around 1:00am for a trip to Gabtali.
On the way, Kawsar slit Raja’s throat with a knife and dumped the body on the roadside at Mirpur-12 and took away the bike, said inspector Uday, who recovered the body.
Kawsar lives in Mirpur. He went to his home after the murder and changed blood stained shirt and pant and then started for Savar riding the motorcycle.
A police team stopped Kawsar at a check-point in Birulia after noticing blood on the motorbike’s number plate, said Savar police officer-in-charge Kazi Mainul Islam.
At one point of interrogation, Kawsar confessed to the killing and snatching of the motorbike.
Savar police then informed Pallabi police about the incident.
Inspector Uday rushed to Savar and arrested Kawsar. On the basis of his information, police recovered the knife used for the murder and the body of Raja around 2:30am.
The body was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
Police said that Kawsar was planning to move to Manikganj.
Police are interrogating 22-year-old Kawsar whether it was his first incident of motorbike snatching or he was involved in such incidents before. He will be produced before the court today.
