The Police Investigation Bureau yesterday filed charges against seven people, including former Police Superintendent Babul Akhter, in a case linked to the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.
Abu Jafar Mohammad Omar Faruk, of the PBI metro unit and also the investigating officer on the case, filed the indictment in a Chattogram court.
The six other defendants are Kamrul Islam Musa, Ehteshamul Haque Bhola aka Haniful Haque, Motaleb Mia Wasim, Md Anwar Hossain, Md Khairul Islam Kalu and Md Shahjahan Mia, court sources said.
Of the accused, Babul, Wasim, Shahjahan and Anwar are now behind bars while Ehteshamul obtained bail from a higher court. Musa, Babul’s informant, and Kalu have been on the run since the murder.
The PBI dropped the names of Saidul Islam Sakku, Nurunnabi, Md Rashed and Abu Naser Gunnu.
Rashed and Nurunnabi were killed in an alleged shootout several days later in the murder of Mitu, while the PBI found no involvement from Sakku or Gunnus during the investigation.
In the meantime, 97 people have been made witnesses in the indictment.
Speaking to journalists at the court, PBI SP Naima Sultana said, ‘We filed the indictment after a thorough investigation, during which we found that Babul Akhter was implicated in Mitu’s murder’.
Kamrul Hasan, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Procuratorate) of the CMP said, ‘The court has set October 10 for the indictment hearing’.
Babul suddenly became the principal accused from the plaintiff after failing to provide sufficient replies when called in for questioning by the PBI’s Chattogram metro unit in May 2021.
One of the questions concerned the payment of Tk 3 lakh to Babul’s Business partner and now accused fugitive Kamrul Islam Musa shortly after the murder. Musa worked as Babul’s informant after the latter became an SP.
Two of the testimonies were given by Sayful Haque, another Babul business associate, and Kazi Al Mamun, a relative of Musa, on May 11 last year after Babul was arrested.
Sayful had said he arranged Tk 3 lakh of Babul’s share of profits from their business and sent the money to Musa through the mobile banking service, a senior PBI official said.
On June 5, 2016, Mitu was stabbed and shot while taking her son to his school bus stop at GEC junction of port city. After the murder, Babul filed a case against three unidentified men at Panchlaish Police Station.
On September 8, Babul filed a complaint accusing PBI chief Banaj Kumar Majumdar and five others, including two PBI SPs, of physically and mentally torturing him in detention before showing him up in the case arrested.
