A mother sold her two-month-old infant for Tk 30,000 to pay off debts.
A police team reunited the mother and kid yesterday, three days after the terrible tragedy.
The mother, Lima Hanufa, said her husband hasn’t worked in five years since a road accident incapacitated him.
Lima, her family’s sole breadwinner, couldn’t work after having their youngest kid.
She stated the family’s debt rose to Tk 30,000 due to Tk 12,000 in rent, Tk 10,000 in groceries, and Tk 8,000 in pharmacy.
On Monday, the mother sold her child to a neighboring childless couple for Tk 30,000 to avoid creditors.
Lima paid her debts with the money.
On information, Ashraful Islam, officer-in-charge of Tongi East Police Station, visited the childless couple, paid them Tk 30,000 from his own cash, and returned the child with her mother.
Yeasin Arafat, sub-inspector of the police station, said the OC also arranged a job for the child’s father in a local industry.
SI Yeasin was the first to arrive after 999 alerted police.
Swarna Akhter, the child’s buyer, claimed, “Child cost Tk 30,000. We returned the child to the mother on police orders.”
