The Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan hinted that the Bangladesh squad that played against Ireland in the home series in March is set to be finalised as the squad for the forthcoming ICC World Cup scheduled for October-November of this year in India.
The Tigers played a three-match one-day international series against the Irish, where the Tamim Iqbal-led side beat the visitors 2-0.
While the team comprised of veterans like Tamim, Mushfiqur Rahim, and ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, there were also young guns like Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Hasan Mahmud, and so on.
However, another veteran campaigner Mahmudullah was axed from this side, and in the series, Mushfiq batted in Mahmudullah’s usual number six position instead; where Mushfiq did great.
The BCB president believes that this side will also feature in the World Cup if any unusual situation comes up, as he felt there is not one player in the current Bangladesh side that can be dropped in favour of someone else.
‘We don’t see any opportunity to experiment. Who do you think we can drop? Can we drop Tamim or Liton [Das]? Can we drop Towhid, Mushfiq, Shanto? Everyone is performing well and pivotal for the side, and on top of that, we will need to incorporate Taskin into the side as well when he returns from injury,’ Nazmul told the reporters on Friday.
‘The question is who will be included in the side alongside them. I don’t know who will be included. Anyone might get the chance. There is Mahmudullah, Yasir [Ali] Afif [Hossian], Mosaddek [Hossain], and others. We have options, and it won’t be a mistake if we take any of them. It isn’t a must to include any of them either. It will ultimately depend on the team combination,’ he added.
Nazmul also asserted that things will be more cleared in the forthcoming home series against Afghanistan, as they would be able to understand the situation more and decide who will be suitable to feature in the World Cup.
‘We will observe who might do well if given a chance, and who might be suitable enough to get included in the World Cup squad in case of any injury. But more or less, the squad will remain the same.’
Nazmul also clarified that unless any further issue comes up, Liton, the current vice-captain of the Tigers’ Test side, will lead them in the one-off Test against the Afghans in absence of regular captain Shakib.
