All-rounder Shorna Akter stole the show in Benoni as she picked up five wickets to hand Bangladesh women’s national team their first-ever win on South African soil as they beat the Proteas by 13 runs in the first Twenty20 International of the three-match series on Sunday.
This is Bangladesh’s first win against South Africa since 2012
Batting first, courtesy of an unbeaten 62 from opener Murshida Khatun, alongside skipper Nigar Sultana Joty’s quickfire 34 runs off 21 balls, Bangladesh posted 149-2 on the board.
In reply, South Africa started well as Anneke Bosch (67) and Tazmin Brits (30) added 69 runs in 57 balls.
Rabeya Khan brought the first breakthrough as she dismissed the latter, and then the havoc began from Shorna.
She picked up Sune Luus (18) in her second over, and then the dangerous Bosch alongside Nondumiso Shangase in her next.
Then, the 16-year-old came to bowl the final over with 24 runs to defend and picked up two wickets, giving away just 10 runs to seal the historic win.
