Professor Dr. Melita Mehjabeen has been appointed as an Independent Director on the Board of BAT Bangladesh, following a board meeting held on November 12, 2024, said a press release.
With an impressive career spanning nearly 20 years in academia, research, financial services, consulting, and board roles, Professor Mehjabeen brings a wealth of professional and institutional expertise to the company.
Currently a tenured faculty member at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Dhaka University, Professor Mehjabeen is celebrated for her dedication to education and ability to create engaging learning environments. She teaches diverse courses, including finance, accounting, ethics, and leadership, reflecting her passion for fostering knowledge and professional growth.
Her PhD from the University of Manchester, UK, focused on CSR reporting practices in Bangladesh, underscoring her commitment to corporate governance and sustainability. Beyond academia, she has conducted impactful research and training on governance and sustainability in collaboration with various institutions.
Professor Mehjabeen’s expertise extends into the boardroom, where she has served as an Independent Director and Chair of Audit and NRC Committees at Unilever Consumer Care Ltd. and National Bank Ltd. These roles have enhanced her proficiency in governance and stakeholder management.
Her career also includes a stint as Product Sales Manager at Citibank, N.A., and an earlier position as a Management Trainee at BAT Bangladesh. Additionally, her consultancy work has focused on leadership development, financial literacy programs, and fostering green skills for sustainable growth, further demonstrating her versatility.
Expressing her enthusiasm about the appointment, Professor Mehjabeen stated, “I am always driven by a passion for continuous learning. While performing my role as an Independent Director, I will try my best to collaborate effectively with my fellow board members to make a positive impact and bring about meaningful changes in corporate practices, leveraging my experience as an academic and an industry professional.”
