Many parts of the country is expected to witness moderate to heavy and very heavy rainfall in the coming days due to the formation of a low-pressure system over the north Bay and adjoining coastal areas, the Met office said in its latest forecast.
According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s 120-hour weather outlook commencing at 9:00am today, the monsoon remains fairly active over Bangladesh and moderate over the north Bay.
The axis of the monsoon trough runs through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and passes through the centre of the low across southern Bangladesh to Assam.
Another low-pressure area is likely to form over the east-central Bay and adjoining areas around September 24, with the potential to intensify.
Due to the impact of low pressure, light to moderate rain with thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds are likely at many places over Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions, with moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall possible in isolated areas today.
Meanwhile, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, and Sylhet divisions may also see scattered rain throughout the day.
Both day and night temperatures are expected to fall slightly across the country.
In Dhaka, heavy rain started since early morning today. Accompanied by thunder showers, rains are likely to continue in the capital and its surrounding areas.
The capital recorded a minimum temperature of 25.5°C this morning. The maximum temperature yesterday was 33.7°C. In the last 24 hours, 40mm of rainfall was recorded in the capital.
Forecast for coming days
Tomorrow (Day 2, beginning 9:00am on September 23), rain is likely to decrease slightly in central and northern regions. However, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are still expected at a few places in Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet, and isolated places in other divisions including Dhaka. Temperatures may rise slightly.
On 24 September (Day 3), rainfall may become more widespread again as a new low-pressure system is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal. Showers are likely at a few places in all eight divisions, with moderately heavy rainfall possible at isolated locations. Day and night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
For September 25 (Days 4), rain will persist mainly in the southern and southeastern regions, with intermittent rain likely in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet.
On September 26 (Day 5), rainfall activity may once again increase in intensity, particularly in Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet, with a risk of heavy showers.
