Abahani Limited clinched the title of the season’s first hockey tournament when they thumped Bangladesh Army 7-1 in the Victory Day Hockey Championship final at the Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium on Monday. The Dhanmondi-based club faced very little challenge from the Army men thanks to Puskar Khisha Mimo and Ashraful, who scored a brace each, while Khorshedur Rahman, Sheikh Md Nannu and Hasan Zubair Niloy netted a goal apiece to confirm a resounding victory.
Milon Hossain pulled a goal back for Army, whose only consolation was the top-scorer’s award for Abdul Malek, who netted seven goals in the competition. Ashraful Islam of Abahani was adjudged as the player of the tournament for his outstanding performance.
`It’s a great achievement for me as we won the title after a one-year gap,’ said Mahbub Harun, coach of Abahani on Monday.
`The players performed according to my instruction which made the win look easy. Definitely this trophy will give an extra motivation ahead of the forthcoming Premier League,’ he added.
Private television channels ATN Bangla and ATN News owner Mahfuzur Rahman handed over the trophy to the winners after the final match as chief guest.
