Abahani Limited swept past Dhaka Wanderers Club 8-0 in the opening game of the UCB Club Cup hockey tournament at the Maulana Bhasani hockey stadium on Tuesday.
The Sky Blue outfit are participating in the competition without any foreign players but faced no difficulty in beating Dhaka Wanderers as six different goalscorers joined in the goal-fest.
Din Islam opened the scoring in the 13th minute while penalty-corner specialist Khorshedur Rahman doubled the scoreline in the 19th minute from a penalty corner.
Nayeem Uddin made it 3-0 in the 24th minute while Hasan Zubayer Niloy scored the first of his two goals in the 28th minute. Abahani posted their fifth goal in the 38th minute when a penalty corner from Khorshedur went into the back of the net.
In the second half, Abahani boosted their margin through an own goal and two minutes later, Niloy made it 7-0 when he scored his second. Ashraful Islam completed the rout in the 55th minute when he scored the eighth for Abahani.
United Commercial Bank Limited’s executive vice president Abu Alam Yusuf inaugurated the tournament as chief guest. Defending champions Usha Krira Chakra will go up against Azad Sporting Club in the second game today at the same venue.
