The Rapid Action Battalion in a drive rescued an abducted imam and held five ‘abductors’ from Dania area of Rayerbagh in the capital on Saturday evening.
The rescued was identified as Kazi Jaher, imam of Institute of Public Health mosque in capital’s Mohakhali area. The arrested were Shah Alam, Abul Kalam, Shuvo, Masuma Khatun and Shamsun Nahar.
At a press conference in its office at Dhalpur on Sunday afternoon, RAB-10 operations officer Fazle Rabbi told reporters that miscreants abducted the imam on Friday after Jumma prayer when he went to conduct a prayer session to inaugurate a shop at Rayerbagh.
After the session, the miscreants abducted Jaher and forced him to sign up a document mentioning that he was selling his
land at his village home Bhola. They later called Jaher’s family and demanded Tk 5 lakh as ransom, Rabbi said.
Later, Jaher’s family informed the matter to RAB and they rescued Jaher from a house at Dania area.
Lawsuits were filed against the alleged ‘abductors’.
