Almost a year-old Afsana, a victim of an acid attack drew her last breath yesterday afternoon at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after suffering indescribable agony for a month.
The baby who was burnt along with her mother and aunts, at Baherchar village in Keraniganj on December 11 last year finally succumbed to her injuries only four days before her first birthday.
Her mother Asma Begum, 22, and mother’s sisters Nazma Begum, 24, and Suraiya, 28, also sustained burns when a criminal threw acid on them
The baby had 18 percent of her body severely burnt, while the other three sustained minor burns, said doctors at DMCH Burn unit.
Nazma, Asma’s sister had been in a feud with her husband’s first wife, and her brother Sohel had probably committed the crime, alleged the victim’s family.
Dulal Miah, the child’s father, said, they had come to Baherchar from Ruhitpur to visit their relatives last year, three days before the ill-fated day, he said.
His only child is dead and his wife’s face has been disfigured by burns but yet the miscreants have not been brought to justice, he said.
They were planning to celebrate their daughter’s first birthday on January 17, a tearful father said.
Md Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Keraniganj Police Station told The Daily Star that Sohel and his brother Harun were arrested and were taken into remand for five days, but they have not confessed to their involvement in the incident.
A case has been filed against them as well as two other suspects, he added.
