A youth threw acid on his sister-in-law over dowry at Kurarghat in the city’s Kamrangirchar Wednesday night.
Beauty, 22, a resident of Shahidnagar in Lalbagh, suffered burns on her right hand, chest and face, and is taking treatment at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
She told reporters at the hospital that her brother-in-law Labu along with three others waylaid her at Kurarghat around 9:30pm when she was coming back home from the tailoring shop at Kamrangirchar she works for.
She added that Labu asked her to sign on a blank paper to be used for her divorce but when she denied signing, Labu poured acid on her.
Hearing her scream, people from neighbourhoods rushed to the place and took her to the hospital.
The attackers, however, fled the scene.
Beauty said, “My husband and in-laws often torture me for Tk 1 lakh dowry and about 15 days ago my two-month baby was aborted because of their torture.” Amid such oppression, she came to his father’s house and started working at the shop four days back.
Her husband Sujan Mia had threatened her once that she could not bear his child without paying the dowry, she added.
