Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) Forensic Department’s Assistant Professor Md Sohel Mahmud on Monday afternoon told the news agency, ‘Initially it seems to be a case of suicide.’
Gulshan police OC Rafiqul Islam told the news agency that they recovered Mita’s dead body at around 6:45am from her flat on Road no 4 on Gulshan Avenue.
Many of her colleagues and of the media swarmed the residence after the news of her death spread.
However, rumours circling her death went viral as police could not say anything on whether she committed suicide or was killed.
‘Mita Noor’s body has shown all the signs of suicide,’ Sohel Mahmud said. But there were no wounds on her body.
The forensic expert said they preserved her kidney, liver and stomach for further tests.
OC Islam said Mita and her husband Shahnoor Rahman Rana had been having a dispute for the past several days over ‘something involving Rana’s office’.
Their conjugal dispute had spun out of control. Only two days ago police settled a dispute between the couple, he said.
‘Mita Noor was at home yesterday (Sunday) and we contacted her at night. They (the couple) had lunch together and went to bed after dinner,’ he said.
Islam said Rana called the police station at around 6:40am on Monday and he went to the couple’s Lake Valley apartment with another police officer. There they found Mita Noor hanging from a ceiling fan.
Members of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) went there and collected evidence. The body was sent to DMCH morgue for autopsy.
Mita’s mother Mariam Sarkar said her daughter and Rana had tied the knot 24 years ago. They have two sons. Elder son Sadman Noor Priyo is an O-Level student and younger Sejat Noor Priththi is a grade six student.
Although Mariam could not find any reason for her daughter’s apparent suicide, a private TV station quoting Mita’s father Fazlur Rahman reported the couple often quarreled.
Rana was home on Monday afternoon when Mita’s body was being sent for autopsy but police did not allow journalists to speak with him.
Mita Noor made her TV debut in 1989 with weekly ‘Sagar Sencha Swadh’ telecast on Bangladesh Television. But her big break came three years later with an advertisement of Olympic Battery. She became a known face in soap operas afterwards.
She also had a shot at directing with short play, ‘Chowngali’, in 2011.
