Afzal on stage again

Afzal on stage againRenowned actor Afzal Hossain will perform today in a collage production of Dhaka Theatre featuring the important episodes of the troupe’s plays staged in the past 40 years.
The collage will be staged at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy as part of Dhaka Theatre’s 40th anniversary celebrations programme.
‘I thought I should also join my former colleagues who are not regular these days in theatre like me,’ said Afzal Hossain, who does appear onstage since the mid 1980s.
Once a dominating theatre actor, Afzal Hossain, who is now an established TVC maker, has no plan to be regular in theatre.
But, Afzal’s fans will love to know that the actor cum director has made a thriller series named Chhoto Kaku to be aired during the Eid. He will also play the titular in the series.
The drama series, claims Afzal, will not be like the conventional daily soap operas aired on the TV channels in terms of the theme, treatment and airing schedule.
The play, based on juvenile writer Faridur Reza Sagar’s thriller having the same title, will feature a noble soul called affectionately as Chhoto Kaku, who helps people to overcome problems.
Again, the play will be aired during the festivals only. The first story of the thriller series titled Coxbazarer Kakatua will be aired on Channel-i in eight consecutive days beginning on the day before the upcoming Eid day.
So far, popular thriller writer Abdul Hakim has dramatised the 35 episodes of the series. The next episodes will be aired during the other festivals.
‘The series has no target audience. As the story of the play has been dramatised from a juvenile thriller, the children will also love to watch the thriller,’ said Afzal Hossain.
Afzal is also coming up with another interesting programme in the Eid. ‘I’ve also made a programme on Tagore song featuring Rezwana Chowdhury Bannya. The programme will not only feature some songs filmed in Germany, but will also include stories of Tagore’s stay in Germany. Since Rabindranath Tagore’s Noble winning book of poems Gitanjali was first translated in German before English, I thought it could be an interesting show during the Eid celebrations.’
Earlier, he also made such programmes featuring Tagore’s stay in Shilaidaha in Bangladesh and his visit in Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
Afzal further said that he would act in two teleplays during the Eid festival. ‘Both of the teleplays [directed by Naim Imtiaz and Ashraful Alam] portray interesting stories. So, I agreed to act in those,’ said Afzal, who appears occasionally on small screen these days.
‘Acting or directing is not my profession rather my passion. So, I take those tasks which draw my interest,’ said Afzal Hossain.
Afzal Hossain joined Dhaka Theatre in the mid 1970s and was enlisted in BTV as an actor in the same time. From the mid-1970s, when he made his debut on the small screen, he became an icon as a romantic hero.  The actor also starred in three movies including box office hit Dui Jibon and Natun Bou. Since mid 1980s Afzal is busy with TVC making and has contributed a lot for developing the sector to today’s level.
