Ailing Hefazat-e-Islam Secretary General Junaid Babunagari who was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of BIRDEM Hospital in a critical condition, was released on bail on Wednesday. Babunagari who was on 22-day remand in three cases in connection with the political violence that took place during Hefazat’s recent Dhaka siege programme, was hurriedly granted bail by a Dhaka court on an application filed by his lawyer.
In a rare move, the deputy jailer (prison) Zahidul Islam himself went to BIRDEM Hospital and provided necessary documents to Babunagari’s relatives immediately after the court granted him bail.
The Hefazat leader, who was arrested on May 6 and was put under police remand later, was released as his condition deteriorated following a leg surgery on Tuesday afternoon. On Saturday, he was taken to the hospital.
Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan passed the order after a hearing on the bail petitions.
Though there was rumour about Babunagari’s death on Wednesday, doctors in BIRDEM and relatives dismissed the rumour saying that Babunagari’s condition was improving and he was out of danger.
Talking with the media, Professor Dr Naruzzaman said, the Hefazat leader is suffering from kidney related disease. “We have conducted his kidney dialysis and had an MRI done on his leg today. Now, he is out of danger,” he added.
“We are closely monitoring his condition constantly and all types of supports have been provided to him from the Hospital,” he said.
Mawlana Md Abdullah, son-in-law of Babunagari, said, his father-in-law is seriously ill. “We will keep him at BIRDEM Hospital till his recovery. After his recovery we will take him to Chittagong,” he said.
He was arrested by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from Lalbagh Shahi Mosque in the capital on May 6, in connection with the cases filed over May 5 violence in the capital.
