The UCB-BCB XI’s Al-Amin Hossain on Thursday became the latest Bangladeshi cricketer to make history in an eventful 2013, taking five wickets in an over against Abahani Limited at the Victory Day Twenty20 Cup in Sylhet. Al-Amin took the ball for the final over of Abahani’s innings and dismissed Mehedi Maruf with the first ball after Arafat Sunny held on to a catch as the runners crossed.
Nazmul Milon, the other set batsman, took two off the next ball before Al-Amin made him the first of four consecutive victims and tied Andre Russell’s record of four wickets from successive deliveries, set in Bangalore in September when his West Indies A side lost to India A.
Milon was caught by Imrul Kayes before Sohrawardi Shuvo, Nayeem Islam and Nabil Samad were all dismissed off the first ball they faced after offering catches to Muktar Ali, Marshal Ayub and Enamul Haque Jr respectively.
The Amber Victory Day T20 Cup was given official List A status before the start of the competition, meaning that Al-Amin’s five wickets in an over established a new official T20 record.
The record-breaking feat gave Al-Amin figures of 5-17 in his side’s two-wicket victory.
After the match, Al-Amin reflected on the achievement.
‘Actually I was very nervous coming to bowl that over. Muktar bhai was taken for a ride just before I came in, so that was playing in the back of my mind,’ he said, noting that Muktar Ali had conceded 21 runs in the 19th over.
