BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the ruling Awami League has lost its balance after its defeat in five city corporation elections. “The defeat of the ruling party in the elections proved that people have no confidence in the regime. The country’s people don’t want to see them in power any more,” he said while talking to reporters in front of Apollo Hospital in the city after visiting Jagannath University unit Chhatra Dal activist Sirajul Islam, who was shot and injured allegedly by police. The BNP leader shrugged off Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her son’s claim to have information that the AL would return to power again and said they are telling this to restore back confidence in the demoralised party leaders and activists.
“The Prime Minister and her son are making such comments to boost the morale of the demoralised party leaders and activists. They can do it but it won’t work,” he observed.
On July 23, Prime Minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy claimed he had information that the AL would return to power in the next general election.
The Prime Minister defended her son’s comment on Sunday saying that Joy said this on the basis of a survey.
The premier also said the findings showed that the AL was leading in the opinion poll and people still have their faith and confidence in the party.
Fakhrul said the PM’s comment does not match with the ground reality. “Various surveys and opinion polls carried out by different newspapers showed a sharp fall in AL’s popularity,” he added.
He alleged that AL was involved in all moves to hinder democracy in the past and they are doing the same thing now.
“Cancellation of the caretaker government system is also part of their conspiracy. They’re doing everything necessary to keep BNP away from election race,” he added. He warned that they would not allow holding any election under a party government no matter what conspiracy the ruling party was hatching.
Earlier, Fakhrul visited Sirajul and enquired about his condition from the on-duty doctors.
On July 25, Sirajul was shot by police when JCD activists brought out a procession near the Jagannath University protesting disparaging remarks against BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman.
