Awami League (AL) Advisory Council member and Minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta on Friday called upon the opposition to sit for a dialogue over the next election-time government to end the country’s prevailing political standoff. “The path of holding talks over an election time government will be ended in October, so the opposition should sit for talks with the government before October,” Suranjit said this while addressing a discussion meeting in
the city. Bangabandhu Academy orgainsed the discussion at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) marking the 19th death anniversary of Shahid Janani Jahanara Imam, with the organization’s advisor AL leader Haji Mohammad Selim in the chair.
Calling upon the opposition to take part in the next general elections under an interim government headed by the incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the AL lawmaker said, there is no way of going to power through unconstitutional process or a rigged election.
“So, sit for talks without wasting time. The ongoing political standoff over the holding of the next general polls must be resolved before dissolution of the present ninth parliament,” he said.
Suranjit also urged the opposition to place a model of a polls-time government before the parliament in line with the Constitution.
The AL leader reiterated that the next general elections would be held under a party government as the caretaker government system was annulled through the Constitution amendment. “CG is a dead issue so the opposition should not discuss over it,” he said.
The ruling party lawmaker also projected the Sheikh Hasina government’s tremendous success in the fields of education, information, technology, agriculture and in poverty reduction.
Among others, Sheikh Hasina’s economic advisor Dr Mashiur Rahman, AL advisory council member Advocate Yousuf Hossain Humayun and Krishoke league General Secretary Advocate Shamsul Haque Reza were present on the occasion.
