Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on Monday termed the opposition chairperson Khaleda Zia’s proposal on an election-time government as “an outcome of her personal vengeance” and said she unveiled such proposal to pull the country backward from its current progress march. In his initial remarks shortly after the opposition leader wrapped up her speech on an outline of the proposed election-time government, he told newsmen that “her proposal is nothing but the repetition of her demand for a non-party caretaker government which is unconstitutional and it is not acceptable to Awami League.”
Meanwhile, at a hurriedly called news conference, Environment Minister Hasan Mahmud rejected Khaleda Zia’s proposal on the election-time government saying that it is unconstitutional. He also alleged that the opposition leader was hatching a conspiracy to halt the continuation of democracy in the country.
That is why, Hasan Mahmud, said Khaleda Zia unveiled such a framework of an election-time government to oversee the next general election due early next year. He said the entire nation expected that the opposition leader would accept the prime minister’s proposal on an all-party poll-time government but she raised her old demand for a non-party caretaker administration which is “unfortunate.”
“Khaleda Zia unveiled such proposals out of her vengeance so that the prime minister could not be head of the poll-time government,” the environment minister said adding that he still hoped that the opposition would eventually accept the premier’s proposals and participate in the next general elections.
