Awami League (AL) candidate Rejwan Ahmed Towfiq, the eldest son of President Abdul Hamid, was unofficially declared winner in the by-polls to Kishoreganj-4 constituency held on Wednesday. Toufiq bagged 98,026 votes in 116 centres out of 118 centres in three upazilas (Itna, Mithamoin and Austagram) while independent candidate Syed Mahitul Islam Asim polled 58, 943 votes, according to returning office at Kishoreganj. In 118 centres the number of voters is 277,126.
After announcement of final result, Rejwan Ahmed Towfiq and Syed Mahitul Islam were not available over phone to make their comments.
Returning officer Md Zahid Hossain informed that ballot boxes of two centres were stuck in the river and a boat was sent to rescue the troubled boat, it will take an hour to announce the complete result.
Returning office at Kishoreganj announced results in phases at his office yesterday night.
Awami League-nominated candidate Rejwan Ahmed Towfiq and independent candidate Syed Mahitul Islam Asim contested the election. Towfiq contested with his symbol boat and Asim contested with his electoral symbol football.
Voting started at 8am and without any interruption ended at 4pm, said returning officers of three upazilas.
Visiting a few voting centres at Itna upazila and Mithamoin upazila, it was found that voters were exercising their voting rights peacefully.
Presiding officers of these centres said vote casting was going on peacefully.
While visiting Ulua Government Primary School centre, it was found voting was taking place peacefully.
However, agent of independent candidate Md Iqbal Hossain alleged an activist of Awami League was creating troubles. He also said the situation became normal afterwards.
Returning officer Md Zahid Hossain told the Independent that the election was held peacefully. But independent candidate alleged over telephone that his agents were driven out from the centres.
“We have not found any justification of his allegation,” the returning officer said.
The constituency fell vacant after appointment of Abdul Hamid as the president of Bangladesh on April 22 of this year.
